Workshops/Keynotes/Social Action:

Issues of social justice, particularly around race, culture, and religion, have led to designing programs that identify how contemplative strategies, particularly in an academic setting, allow for more open, just, and compassionate conversations around difficult topics.  The following are examples of organizations/groups interested in how these issues can be addressed through the use of contemplative and restorative justice practices.

I am the recipient of Naropa University's 2019  Frederick P. Lenz Residential Fellowship, Boulder, Colorado for "Visioning the Eightfold Path: Liberatory Contemplative Practical Empowerment for African-American Educators" January-May, 2019.

I was selected by the Mind & Life Summer Research Institute's "Engaging Cultural Difference and Human Diversity" as a Senior Investigator at Garrison Institute, Garrison, NY, from June 2-8, 2018.

I was the recipient of an Omega Institute Scholarship (one of ten) to attend the Contemplative Practice in Higher Education from September 23-25, 2016 for the Community College of Baltimore County’s personal and professional integration of contemplative practices in to the classroom;
 
I was a recipient of a Contemplative Mind in Society’s Building Communities Grant for “Practical Empowerment: Building Contemplative Communities With Students of Color” focuses on providing faculty/staff with compassionate insights into social and cultural interconnectedness through various contemplative practices fostering cohesion and community through contemplative pedagogy among students of color who might have inadequate second school preparations, disconnect between recent high school graduates and the rigor of academia, limited sense of belong on the college campus, personal biases, limited understanding of the challenges of first generation and low-income students, and student perspectives of faculty strategies to promote retentions for those attending CCBC, Virginia State University, Coppin State University, Howard University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of the District of Columbia;
 
I was one of 23 Contemplative Community Fellows for the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society’s Building Communities Meeting initiative to support and develop contemplative communities on college and university campuses at the Fetzer Institute in Kalamazoo, Michigan from April 14-17, 2016.

I was one of 25 participants invited to Amherst College, Northampton, MA, in a discussion on race and contemplative pedagogy in higher education, sponsored by the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society from April 16-18, 2015.
